Ilm al-Ḥurūf (Arabic: عِلْم الْحُرُوف) or the science of letters, also called Islamic lettrism, is a process of Arabic numerology whereby numerical values assigned to Arabic letters are added up to provide total values for words in the Quran, similar to Hebrew gematria. Used to infer meanings and reveal secret or hidden messages.
ʿIlm al-Ḥurūf is composed of the two words ʿilm (Arabic: عِلْم) meaning “knowledge”, and ḥurūf (Arabic: حُرُوف), the plural of the word ḥarf (Arabic: حَرْف), meaning “letters”.
Hijaiyah letters are divided into 28 makhraj (pronunciation of letters). If we have been familiar with the order of Arabic letters from ALIF to YA (A-Ba-Ta-Tha), it is a sequence of Arabic letters arranged and grouped according to their similarity in shape (Alphabet of the Sun). However, the real sequence of Arabic letters is from ALIF to GHAIN (A-Ba-Ja-Dun or abbreviated ABJAD) or (Alphabet of the Moon).
In the science of wisdom, of course the order of Hijaiyah letters used is the Alphabetic Order or also called the Abjadiyyah Rule. Where in this Abjadiyyah rule, each letter has a numerical value (number).
